Hitokui Village is a small isolated village in Aomori Prefecture. It used to be linked to the main road by a tunnel but it was collapsed by a landslide and never repaired. The only access remaining is by using a suspension bridge after a long detour.
As a result of this isolation, most of the village is using relatively old items, from the buildings to the cars, with people saying it looks like a Showa Era town. Due to those caracteristics, the village attracts a few tourists. Despite this, the village is said to declining, with more than half the houses being empty.
One of the main landmark of the village is the Energy Research Institute, also known as Hitokui Laboratory.
A special type of moss that could be used as a fuel was found in a lake near the village during the war but since then, most of that moss has been used up or sent elsewhere.
