Story[]
Hajime and Miyuki visit Hitokui Village, an isolated village in Aomori Prefecture, to meet their middle school friend, Mayu Midorikawa. Mayu and others guide the two of them to the Hitokui Research Institute, commonly known as the "Human Eating Research Institute (Lab)," in a village that looks like a town from the Showa era.
The research institute also serves as a guest house, and four people came to Hitokui Village for sightseeing. Three of them were former researchers who visited the village to look for "something" left behind by Mayu's father, Professor Midorikawa.
Afterwards, one of the guests Eisuke Wanibe, falls down from the door of the connecting corridor on the second floor and dies. It was the beginning of a serie of deaths that looked like a series of mysterious phenomena "Hitokui" that had occurred in this research institute before the war.

First Case[]
While Kindaichi and his friends are having a welcoming party, they hear a commotion coming from above, and after a while there is a sound as if something crashed into the ground. Kindaichi and his friends rush outside and find Wanibe's corpse on the ground. Apparently, Wanibe fell from the door on the third floor of the research institute. The door on the third floor was originally the place where a passageway was hung, but it has now been demolished and was locked because it was considered dangerous to open it, but the key had been cut off. In Wanibe's room, there was a flask. It was thought that Wanibe committed suicide by throwing himself from the door and jumping off when another commotion broke out.
Second Case[]
Kindaichi and his friends decide to hold a karaoke tournament to relieve the gloomy atmosphere after Wanibe's "suicide". Kindaichi and Miyuki, who were told by Nakagami to go and call the others, go around each room and call out to everyone. When they arrive at Makine's room, they notice that water is overflowing from inside the room. He rushes inside and finds Makine lying in the bathtub with his wrist cut. Hajima comes there and tells Kindaichi and his friends to tell Nakagami immediately, and Kindaichi immediately dashes to Nakagami! ! Nakagami was in contact with Mayu on a black phone , but when he heard about Asakine, he immediately contacted a doctor and rushed to the scene. However, by the time Kindaichi returned to the scene with Nakagami, Asakine was already there. He was taking his last breath.
Third Case[]
Kindaichi and his friends decide to see the scene of Dr. Midorikawa's suicide two years ago. Kindaichi enters the basement using a key found under the carpet in front of the door and discovers a code written on the wall, but is immediately chased out of the room by Nakagami who arrives. Kindaichi, Miyuki, Mayu, and Nakagami talk about Dr. Midorikawa's suicide, but the mood turns sour that they decide to change their mood at karaoke, but then Tanise comes and discovers that Zaizen is missing. know that Kindaichi and his friends search all over the laboratory to find the missing Zaizen, but are unable to find him.The only place they do not search is the basement where Dr. Midorikawa committed suicide. When Kindaichi and his friends come to the basement, the door is closed and they try to enter using the key under the carpet, but the key is missing, so they enter with the key Nakagami brought and tie a rope to the door knob. They discover Zaizen's body hanging.
Zaizen died just as Kindaichi and his friends were performing karaoke, and the only keys in the basement were the one he left under the carpet and the two keys he kept in Nakagami's laboratory. One of them was in the possession of the deceased Zaizen, and Nakagami's laboratory was also locked, making it impossible for anyone to break in from the outside. Nakagami himself had been singing at karaoke, so this incident involved hanging himself with a doorknob. No one was able to commit the crime except Zaizen, who was in charge of the crime.
