Isamu Kenmochi (剣持 勇 Kenmochi Isamu) is a Tokyo homicide police inspector with unimpressive deduction skill who first met Hajime Kindaichi in the Opera House Murder Case. He is often the investigating officer on Kindaichi's cases and provides the official stamp of approval Kindaichi often needs to pursue his investigations. He believes fully in Kindaichi's ability.
Appearance[]
Personality[]
When he first debut Opera House Murder Case, Kenmochi is shown to be a rude and more heartless than his later appearances, this is due to him being not familiar with both Kindaichi and Miyuki. After Kindaichi and everyone else found the first dead body, Kenmochi who were in a holiday in the island said to a crying Miyuki "I'm the one who should be crying, this case ruined my holiday!"
He is physically strong as he's a black-belt in Judo. Kenmochi has reasonable experience as an inspector. However, his deductive skills are not that impressive. He has trained many budding detectives and knows many people. A good-natured person, he cares a lot about his family, and is a great colleague and friend.
Relationships[]
Hajime Kindaichi[]
Kenmochi often asks for Hajime's help in solving difficult cases, promising him some treat afterwards. In turn, Hajime seeks Kenmochi's help whenever he faces hindrances during mystery solving. They share a close bond, and are sometimes mistaken for being relatives. Hajime calls Kenmochi 'Ossan', meaning 'Uncle'.
Kengo Akechi[]
Akechi is Kenmochi's superior, despite being twenty years younger than him. They don't share such a pleasant relationship, and Kenmochi often gets annoyed at Akechi's attitude and sarcasm. Sometimes amused at Kenmochi's thinking and bickerings with Hajime, Akechi even said that he would never be bored with people like Kenmochi around.
At first glance, he seems to be on bad terms with Akechi, but he honestly admits his convictions and reasoning powers (although he hated Akechi with all his strength when he was initially disgusting).

Etymology[]
- The name Isamu means "brave, courage" (勇).
- Isamu's surname Kenmochi means "sword, blade, saber" (剣) (ken) and "hold, have" (持) (mochi).
Trivia[]
- Kenmochi often replaces manga only police detectives in the anime such as Kyoko Kaya in Half Murderer and Kotaro Tawarada in Western-Style Hotel Murder Case.
- Kenmochi could be compared to Inspector Juzo Megure from Detective Conan. Being both police inspectors and doesnt have the best deductive skills to solve much case thus relies on the protagonists help (Kindaichi for Kenmochi, Shinichi/Conan for Megure).
- Kenmochi has an extremely similar look as Yosuke Itsuki in his younger days, as shown in Bizarre Circus Murder.
- Kenmochi's age appears to be retconned in Murder Committed by Inspector Kenmochi. In Hida's Trick of House Murder Case, Shino Tatsumi is his old friend and while never explicitly stated, to be the same age as her, being 37. In Murder Commited by Inspector Kenmochi, his wife Kazue Kenmochi states his age to be 48.
