Kaoru Yakushiji (薬師寺 かおる Yakushiji Kaoru ) is a 3rd year student at Shuo High School and one of Kengo Akechi's old friend.

In the anime's class placement test, she scored 495 points in five subjects, placing second (fifth in the original), just like Akazawa in the original. She has such a severe fear of heights that she can't even get on the platform to climb the bookshelf. She is treated somewhat unfavorably in the Akechi group, such as being pointed out in public by Akechi that she has "a sticky mouth" (much to her friends amusement and her embarrassment)" and that the answer to Akazawa's deduction question is cut off as "0 points" by Akechi.
Despite that, it's clear that the Kaoru is still a core part of the group and is willing to help Akechi as she possibly can to solve the mystery.

Etymology[]
- Kaoru's surname Yakushiji means "Healing Buddha" (薬師) (yakushi) and "temple" (寺) (ji).
