Shigeru Nagashima (長島 滋 (ながしま しげる Nagashima Shigeru) is an Inspector of the Nagano Prefectural Police. He makes his first appearance in Murder Committed by Young Kindaichi.

Appearance[]

He has black hair and some white hair on his head and a small wart on the right side of his nose. He's tough-faced and a typical straight-laced detective no matter what he looks like.

Personality[]

In his debut arc, he's initially depicted as a stern and acts hostile towards Kindaichi as he firmly believe he's the culprit who killed Goryu Tachibana due to the fact there's only one footprints into his reading room, which is Kindaichi's. He wants to interrogate Kindaichi and forces him to admit the crime that he didn't commit.

He has a hot-blooded side to him, when he saw Kindaichi on the train in Murder Committed by Young Kindaichi, he jumped on the train even though the train was already moving, and broke the window glass with his pistol (in the anime version, he kicked it out). ) rushed inside and cornered Kindaichi.

He tends to be arrogant, but when his subordinates were injured during the investigation, he said, "I'm glad it wasn't a serious injury!", implying he does care for his subordinates.

After Murder Committed by Young Kindaichi , he began to call Hajime "Kindani" like Kotaro Tawarada, but perhaps because of the debt of chasing Hajime, unlike Tawarada, he calls Hajime as an insult. He honestly evaluates Kindaichi's reasoning ability, and when he appears in subsequent cases, he complains and provides investigative information to Kindaichi. Unexpectedly, he cares about Kindaichi, and when Kindaichi's friend was killed in the Heresy Mansion Murder Case and Kindaichi was depressed, he said, "Get out of this mansion quickly! Otherwise, you may be the next to be killed. Is that you?", he clumsily said a line that seemed to care about him, and Kindaichi was asked, "Are you worried about me?" In French Silver Coin Murder Case, he was irritated by the words and actions of the famous detective Sébastien Maigret, so maybe he was originally not good at people who are detectives. Surprisingly, he seems to have been a literary young man during his university days, and when he heard about the existence of "Jashumon" by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, he was moved, saying, "I didn't know such a work existed...".
