Sota Murakami is one of Hajime Kindaichi's best friends at Fudo High School and of the supporting characters in the series. They were friends since kindergarten. He appears first in Amakusa Treasure Legend Murder Case, although only his first name was revealed. His last name is shown in Jail Gate Cram School Murder Case. He somewhat replaces the arrested Takashi Senke.
