The culprit of the case is Manami Mizushima, with her mother Youko as an accomplice in covering up the crime. The killed Shibata was actully Youko's first husband and Manami's biological father. Youko broke up with Shibata after he was arrested for a crime and married Kensaku, with Manami came to accept Kensaku as her real father and tried to forget about Shibata. On the day of murder however, Shibata was released from the prison and visited Manami to threaten into aiding him financially in exchange for not spreading the news of "famous idol being a daughter of criminal", the fact that will not only destroy her reputation but also her mother and Kensaku's relationship. He later made Manami came to his hideout and revealed his plan to not only kidnap Kensaku and extort hefty sum of money, but to also do the same to her and her mother for the rest of their life. In an impulse, Manami beat him to death with an ashtray, and called her mother to inform about the situation. The two decide to stage a kidnapping attempt in order to create an alibi for Manami and to make it appear that Shibata was her kidnapper who was killed by an accomplice.
