Toshiro Funaki is one of the chess players and the victim in Dead Person's Checkmate. He also one of Kengo Akechi's friend.

He was said to be the favorite to win the chess tournament this time, but he lost to Goldman. However, Funaki notices a certain fraud and says that he will accuse to the chess federation, so he is beaten to death by Goldman. He is a friend and chess buddy of Akechi, and leaves a dying message of "upside-down pawn" for Akechi to understand.
In the original story, he was killed as soon as the past story started, but in the anime, a little conversation with Akechi is added. At this point, he had lost a game of chess to Goldman and was brooding.
